Guinea Hen Weed’s HIV Fighting Property

Guinea hen weed is an herb that is popular in Jamaica and has been used traditionally to treat diseases including cancer. The botanical name for Guinea hen weed is petiveria alliacea L and its popularity has led to many scientific studies being done on the plant.

These studies have led to the discovery that one of the plant’s metabolites was a major reason for it’s healing properties. This major metabolite called dibenzyl trisulfide plays a major part in its cancer fighting ability.

A new study has added another amazing property to guinea hen weed’s long list of healing properties. A study in the European Journal of Medicinal Plants by Dr. Henry Lowe and his colleagues showed the metabolite dibenzyl trisulfide inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV-1.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) contains an enzyme that reads the RNA sequence of the virus that has entered a cell and recodes that sequence into a DNA sequence. This makes it difficult for the immune system to properly target and kill the virus, as it hides right under the nose of the immune system.

The enzyme that recodes the sequence is called “reverse transcriptase” and Dr. Lowe and his colleague’s study showed dibenzyl trisulfide blocks HIV’s ability to recode the viral RNA of HIV into DNA.

Drugs like azidothymidine (AZT) are used to combat the spread of HIV in the body by blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme from recoding viral RNA into DNA. Industry will use science to synthesize the reverse transcriptase inhibiting properties of guinea hen weed.

Our socialized paradigms will keep many of us from looking for the healing herbs under our noses that are a blessing from “The Unity” of life and nature. We must get back in touch with nature and use what it had provided for us for free to keep us healthy.
