Organic fruits and vegetables are healthier than conventional, but don’t let that stop you from loading up on conventional fruits and vegetables if that is what you have access to.

Organic produce is healthier than conventional because organic produce excludes the use of genetically modified organisms and synthetic pesticides, and minimizes the use of other pesticides.

Various pesticides have been associated with increased risk of cancer because of the damage they do to DNA. This information would seem to only support the consumption of organic fruits and vegetables, but the issue is a bit more complex and the consumption of conventional produce does have its place in supporting healthy living.

Workers who spray crops with pesticides and come in direct contact with greater amounts of pesticides have a greatest risk of developing cancer. Though contact with large amounts of pesticides greatly increase the risk of cancer, contact with lesser amounts of pesticides that remain on the conventional produce is more manageable.

The phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables are so powerful in combating cancer development and proliferation, they negate most of the harmful effects of pesticides on conventional produce. Yes, more phytonutrients in conventional produce are used to combat the pesticides on them, while the lesser amount of pesticides on organic produce allows more of its phytonutrients to be used in combating existing disease.

Many people will shy away from consuming conventional fruits and vegetables if they don’t have access to organic, because they believe the risks of pesticides on conventional produce far outweigh the benefits of conventional produce.

Studies have shown the consumption of conventional fruits and vegetables present a far greater reduction of the rate of the risk of cancer, even though the pesticides used on them contribute to the risk of cancer.

Though it is healthier to consume organic fruits and vegetables, the cancer and disease fighting power of the phytonutrients in conventional fruits and vegetables make its consumption a far better alternative than the consumption of meat[1][2][3] and processed food.[4]
