Wire Mesh Rabbit Cage Build
Wire Mesh Rabbit Cage
I decided to build a wire mesh rabbit cage so I could raise some rabbits. Since rabbit urine and solid waste is an excellent natural pesticide and fertilizer, I decided to have my own supply.
This would be a test for me. If successful, I would likely move my rabbits to another location, so I needed my setup to be easily moveable.
I built my rabbit hutch frame using PVC pipe, and separate cage with PVC coated wire mesh to be lightweight.

Building my wire mesh rabbit cage at my house in Kenya was a bit more challenging than if I built it at my home in the U.S. But I persevered and succeeded.
Mjanaheri Mambrui, where I live on the coast of Kenya, has small shops with limited inventory. I had to look for the items in Malindi Town and in the shopping district in Gongoni.
The shops there didn’t have the PVC coated wire mesh, nor did they have the pliers and M clips I needed to join pieces of mesh together.
Fortunately, I was able to purchase both items online. My preference was the pliers used with J clips and J clips, but I wasn’t able to find them in Kenya.

The wire mesh was thin, so I was concerned that it would be too flimsy to make a sturdy cage. I had to carefully plan my build to use the least amount of mesh pieces to keep the cage as sturdy as possible.
The cage needed to sit inside the PVC Pipe rabbit hutch. The initial dimensions for the cage was 6 feet long, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches high.
The width and height of the interior of my rabbit hutch frame are both 25 inches. The length between both end poles is 6 feet and 4 inches.
Wire Mesh Folds
To keep the cage as sturdy as possible I decided to fold the wire mesh as much as possible, to make as much of the cage as possible.
I folded the mesh widthwise at 25 inches to get the bottom. This left me 23 inches for the back and height of the wire mesh cage. My initial dimension changed from 24 inches by 24 inches, to 25 inches by 23 inches. I also changed the length of the cage from 6 feet long to 6 feet and 4 inches long.
I was able to make the bottom, back, top, two sides, and part of the front of the frame by folding one piece of the wire mesh.
Part of the front:
After I added a piece of mesh to close the front, then I added doors. The opening of the doors measure 11 inches by 11 inches. The wire mesh rabbit cage doors extend 1 inch on both sides and 1 1/2 inches on the top to overlap the openings.
