WCRF International’s 2nd Cancer Prevention Recommendation: Physical Activity
The World Cancer Research Fund International’s second recommendation is to be physically active every day. People who are just beginning to exercise should do moderate exercise for thirty minutes a day.
Moderate exercise can consist of brisk walking, house or yard work. As a person’s physical fitness improves moderate activity should increase to sixty minutes a day. Thirty minutes of vigorous activity like running can be used to replace sixty minutes of moderate exercise.
The goal of exercise is to use up excess energy (carbohydrates and fat) so they are not stored in the body and contribute to weight gain. Activity also works out the heart and cardiovascular system to keep it strong by keeping harmful substances from building on artery walls, which contribute to heart disease and other illnesses.
Research has shown that physical activity can reduce the risk of several types of cancer including bowel cancer, post-menopausal breast cancer, and endometrial cancers.
