The American Medical Association Calls on Hospitals to Serve Plant Based Foods
The American Medical Association Supports Serving Plant Based Foods in Hospitals
The American Medical Association held its Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates and passed a resolution on June 14, 2017 supporting serving plant based meals in hospitals.
Resolution 406
The annual meeting held this year in Chicago saw the House of Delegates pass Resolution 406: Healthful HEAL Hospital Foods:
RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association hereby call on US hospitals to improve the health of patients, staff, and visitors by (1) providing a variety of healthful food, including plant-based meals and meals that are low in fat, sodium, and added sugars, (2) eliminating processed meats from menus, and (3) providing and promoting healthful beverages.
The World Health Organization classified processed meat as “carcinogenic to humans,” a group 1 classification. The World Health Organization gave processed meat this classification in October of 2015.
The American Institute for Cancer also supported the World Health Organization’s findings, but hospitals still serve processed meat to patients, including cancer patients.
The American Medical Association officially called on hospitals to eliminate bacon, ham, sausage, hot dogs, hamburgers, and other processed meat from their menus. The resolution targeted processed foods through targeting foods high in fat, sodium, and added sugars.
Resolution 407
The American Medical Association passed another very important resolution: Resolution 407: SNAP REFORM TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HEALTHFUL FOODS:
RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association requests that the federal government support Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) initiatives to (1) incentivize healthful foods and disincentivize or eliminate unhealthful foods and (2) harmonize SNAP food offerings with those of Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
Resolution 407 is a very important step towards supporting the health of low income Americans.
