High Salt Diets Support Autoimmune Diseases

People in this study who consumed high salt diets had triple the inflammatory cells.[1] Researchers have looked at diets high in animal fat and salt as a cause for the increase in autoimmune diseases in developed countries.

Over Production of Immune T helper 17 Cells

Researchers indicated the increase in autoimmune diseases is partly due to the over-activation of immune cells called T helper 17 cells.

Autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma all involve increased T helper 17 cell activation.

Elevated levels of T helper 17 cells is highly associated with increased levels of salt in the bloodstream. There is a salt sensing enzyme that is responsible for triggering the formation T helper 17 cells.[2]

Over Production of Immune Monocyte Cells

High salt diets trigger the high production of immune cells called monocytes. The increase in monocytes is seen in chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases, and also in blood disorders and in cancer diseases.[3]

A high salt intake also triggers the increase in pro-inflammatory substances and the decrease in anti-inflammatory substances which support the development of autoimmune diseases.
