Seaweed Protects Against Breast Cancer
Seaweed Protects Against Breast Cancer
Chemotherapy is destructive and seems to be a high price pay to treat breast cancer when seaweed protects against breast cancer and other natural plant based methods.
Dr. Gregor makes a good case for using seaweed to protect against breast cancer by examining cancer rates of Japanese women living in Japan and Japanese women who have migrated to the United States who have lived here for a long period of time.
Breast Cancer Rates: Japanese Women
Dr. Greger cited a general increase in breast cancer rates as the traditional diets of East Asia westernized, which some have linked to the quadrupling of the consumption animal protein.
Dr. Greger also indicated the rate of breast cancer for Japanese women living in Japan was lower at 15 per 10000. When Japanese women immigrate to the United States, within ten years the number doubles. When Japanese women become long term residents in the US the number jumps to 105 per 10000.
Again this number jumped because of the move away from eating a diet that consists largely of a plant based diet including seaweed, to eating diets consisting of large amounts of animal protein. He did note that even though the cancer rate jumped to 105 per 10000, that was still lower than the US national average of 120 per 10000 persons.
Seaweed Kills Breast Cancer Cells
The thought is that maybe some so the traditional dietary habits these Japanese women still maintained was the difference maker, like eating seaweed. It has been shown in laboratory tests in vitro that seaweed broth has been effective in clearing cancer cells.
In the video below Dr. Greger shows how much more effective seaweed was in killing cancer kills when compared to a widely used chemotherapy drug, and unlike chemotherapy it didn’t harm noncancerous breast cells.
Nori Seaweed Cuts The Risk Of Breast Cancer
A population study comparing women who had breast cancer to women without breast cancer found that consuming a single sheet of nori a day may cut a woman’s risk of breast cancer in half. The thought is that seaweed favorably alters estrogen metabolism. The more seaweed eaten resulted in lower levels of estrogen in the body, which may lower the risk of breast cancer.
The lower estrogen level may be caused by all the fiber in the nori seaweed, nori’s ability to block the enzyme that undermines the body’s ability to flush out excess hormones, or nori’s ability to interfere with estrogen binding to estrogen receptors. Either way nori seaweed health benefits include its ability to favorably reduce estrogen levels, and eating seaweed protects against breast cancer.
