It is time to rethink Alzheimer’s disease. It may be that once cognitive function is lost because of Alzheimer’s disease it may be gone forever, so focus needs to be put on preventing the onset of the disease.

Evidence now points to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia being a cardiovascular disease, and since cardiovascular disease can be prevented with a whole food plant-based diet or one close to it, it is likely that Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented with the same diet.

Evidence points to Alzheimer’s disease being caused by impaired circulation of blood, nutrients, and oxygen to the brain due to the buildup of cholesterol plaque that hardens and restricts blood flow in the arteries of the brain.

There were two competing theories about what caused Alzheimer’s and the scientific model kept scientists from seeing them as part of the same problem. The amyloid cascade model centers around the buildup of amyloid plaques within the brain being the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, the the cardiovascular model centers on the lack of blood flow to the brain due to atherosclerosis being the cause.

Scientists now realize the two competing theories are not exclusive of each other. Now scientists see the possibility that the buildup of cardiovascular plaques in the arteries may contribute to the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain.
