Cory Booker Introduces The Compassionate Access (CARERS) Act
Senators Cory Booker, Rand Paul, and Kirsten Gillibrand introduced The Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act on 3/10/15 that would remove marijuana from the Schedule I list and would reclassify it as a Schedule II drug. This would allow doctors to legally prescribe medical marijuana to patients without having to be concerned about being penalized by federal law.
Many states have legalized the use of medical marijuana in treating illness, but since marijuana is still illegal by federal law there are still many obstacles that remain for medical marijuana dispensaries and patients.
The Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act would do the fllowing:
- Reclassify marijuana to a Schedule II drug
- Remove barriers to medical marijuana research which its current Schedule I class doesn’t allow
- Remove federal interference
- Allow medical marijuana dispensaries to open banking accounts and other financial services
- Allow veterans to use medical marijuana to combat PTSD
- Allow interstate commerce of cannabidiol (CBD) oils
