Oliver Sacks Author Of ‘Awakenings’ Dies From Cancer
Oliver Sacks has died at the age of 82 from a rare eye cancer that spread to his liver. He made an announcement in February that he will terminally ill, and he put up a courageous battle before dying in his New York City home on Sunday, August 30.
Sacks was a neurologist whose experiences with his patients inspired him to write eye-opening an inspiring books that led us to a journey of the mind and imagination.
Sacks’ book, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, became a 1985 best seller and took us into the world of a man whose brain couldn’t distinguish the face of his wife form a hat.
He hit gold again when his 1973 book, Awakenings, was turned into a Oscar nominated movie in 1990. The movie brought us into the world where Robin Williams portrayed Sacks onscreen as a deeply involved doctor who worked with patient’s whose minds shut down and kept them in a non-responsive state.
Oliver Sacks humanized mental illness by having his audiences experience life through the eyes of people who suffered from mental illness.
