Northwest Family YMCA Set Precedent With Kaye Center for Cancer
The Northwest Family YMCA in Baldwinsville, NY has raised the bar for recreational centers. The YMCA branch opened the Kaye Center for Cancer Wellness, which provides a community environment for cancer survivors to meet and share experiences.
The cancer center was established in memory of Kathleen “Kaye” Sill Hoffman Hershberger, and cancer survivors will be able to to meet in support groups, exercise and meditate together, will be able to view films together.
Dr. Gordon Hershberger, Kaye’s husband, and their family provided many of the ideas that shaped the development of the Kaye Center for Cancer Wellness. Kaye’s caring spirit blesses the center and a plaque inside the facility sums it up best:
“The Kaye Center is filled with love, compassion and caring, just as Kaye would have wished.” The cancer center has a room for prayer and meditation, and calming waterfall to enhance meditation.
The center also contains cardio equipment so cancer survivors can exercise together. The center has a private place for members to grow herbs, which would also be the perfect place for the future planned yoga classes.
The Northwest Family YMCA is also building partnerships with cancer organizations like the Hope for Heather Ovarian Cancer Awareness and American Cancer Society to provide additional services
These partnerships will help provide other services that will be available at the Kaye Center for Cancer Wellness.
