NFL Player DeAngelo Williams Fined By NFL For Supporting His Mother’s Battle With Cancer
Pittsburg Steelers’ running back DeAngelo Williams was fined $5,787 by the NFL for wearing a message that supported his mother’s battle with breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
His black eye, which NFL players use to cut down form glare from the sun, had the message “we will find a cure” and a pink breast cancer awareness ribbon inscribed on it.
NFL league rules state players must have pre-approved consent to wearing any messages on their uniforms, no matter what the message is. DeAngelo Williams did not get approval from the league to wear the eye black, so he was rightfully fined by the NFL for breaking its rules.
The problem many have with the fine is not the fine itself, but it that the money will be given to the owners and many think the money should be donated to a breast cancer awareness charity.
The NFL does support Breast Cancer Month by putting pink accents on the players uniforms and gear worn by coaches, but it appears that even though DeAngelo Williams’ individual action also supported the cause his actions weren’t welcomed by the league because it was in line with NFL league rules.
