National Cancer Institute Gives USC Norris Cancer Center An Elite Rating

The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center receives a five-year from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), after which time institute decides to renew the grant depending on the cancer center’s performance.

The National Cancer Institute reviewed the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center’s performance in June to determine if renewal of the grant was warranted. Indeed is was, as the center earned its best result ever, earning an “outstanding” rating from the NCI’s reviewers.

The center at USC was established in 1971 and was named one of the original comprehensive cancer centers in the United States in 1973. The list of comprehensive centers has grown to 45 since then, and the NCI’s recognition of USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center as an outstanding cancer center places it at the top of NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers.

NCI’s peer review recommended the continued full funding to the center so it could continue its full range of clinical and research programs. NCI was able to pull off such a feat because it benefits from its affiliation with more than 200 scientists and physicians from the Keck School of Medicine and other USC schools.

The peer review that bestowed the honor on NCI was particularly gratifying for the center. Stephen Gruber, director of USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer, said:

“Expert reviewers rigorously evaluated all of our programs, shared resources and infrastructure, and provided us with more than just a meritorious commendation. We received valuable guidance to help us continue our exceptional trajectory.”
