Chrondus crispus
Chrondus crispus and it is a red seaweed, and is commonly known as Irish Moss. The Great Famine that occurred in Ireland between 1845-49 caused Irish people to look for an alternative food source.
The potato crops were decimated by late blight which destroyed the leaves and tubers of the potato plants. Chrondus crispus or Irish moss was known as a poverty food before the famine.
Its use became more popular as a result of the famine, because it served as a staple and helped keep people from starving.
