People are always telling me that eating healthy is too expensive. They do have a point, but I don’t think it is wise to give into eating unhealthy foods at the expense of one’s health. This creates an unhealthy cycle that we take for granted as being routine and the way things are supposed to work. We eat unhealthy foods, get sick, and then have to go to the doctor or hospital for treatment.

Many people have some type of health insurance that either they get for free or partially for free through their jobs or through public assistance. So basically there is not a lot of incentive to eat healthy because it may cost more and the medical bills are mostly being not out of pocket. This does create jobs in the medical industry though, so industry and the economy does benefit at the expense of the people.

There is a reason why junk or unhealthy food is less expensive. Our tax payer dollars subsidize them. For more than a century western governments have used taxed dollars to lower the cost of animal products and certain basic cash crops that include sugar. This has led a shift in western diets to include more meat, dairy, poultry, seafood, sugar cane, corn, and sugar beets, all at the exclusion of fruits and vegetables.

This type of diet supports diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, brain disease, coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, gallstones, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis. I think you get the idea, it destroys the health of our bodies and minds.

Dr. Greger makes this interesting point. Using tax payer money instead to subsidize fruit and vegetable production would increase fruit consumption and would result in better health, and every dollar spent would net 2 dollars in healthcare cost savings. Subsidizing whole grain products would net 13 dollars in healthcare cost savings.

A 10 percent tax on processed foods and milk products would reduce their consumption and would net 2 dollars in healthcare cost savings. It seems like the medical industry really profits by keeping the current destructive western diet in place.

It appears that the health of the citizens is not of concern here. It seems like the current subsidizing policies make these junk and processed foods so accessible that people are gorging themselves to death?
