Some nutrients have great healing properties but the body may have difficulty getting to those nutrients. The bioavailability of curcumin is one of these cases. Bioavailability is a nutrients ability to be absorbed by and be used by the body.

Curcumin is a naturally occurring compound in turmeric. Curcumin gives turmeric is yellowish color and is responsible for much of its healing properties.

The issue is only two percent of turmeric is curcumin, so a simple procedure is used to separate the curcumin from the turmeric which allows us to consume concentrated amounts of curcumin to reap the curcumin benefits.

Extracting the curcumin does present a problem though because it reduces the bioavailability of curcumin. Whole turmeric contains oils that allow its curcumin compounds to more easily absorbed by the body.

Studies have shown that you can increase the bioavailability of curcumin by consuming it with piperine. Piperine is a compound in pepper, like curcumin is a compound in turmeric, that is extracted from pepper to be in a concentrated form. I don’t take curcumin with piperine though because large doses of piperine can be toxic.

We can also increase the bioavailability of curcumin by dissolving it in an oil and consuming it. I dissolve curcumin in coconut oil and consume them together. I use coconut oil because of the great benefits of coconut oil.
