Typically genetically engineered seed technology been used to make crops resistant to pesticides and herbicides, and not to increase nutrition or to increase crop yield. Genetic modification has been primarily use to sell profitable pest resistant products. 80 percent of GMO crops are engineered only for pesticide resistance, which supports the pockets of the top 5 biotech companies.
Engineering crops to be resistance to pesticides allows the crops to sprayed directly with the pesticide instead of spraying the pesticide on the soil. This also results in a large amount of harmful pesticide residue to remain on the crops once they go to market. This buildup of pesticide residue has been shown to be harmful to human beings.
