Durham Bulls Shave Heads to Support Eight-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Diego Hernandez
In a show of support and to bring awareness to 8-year-old Diego Hernandez’s battle with kidney cancer, Diego was allowed to throw out the first pitch of the game. In a show of solidarity the manager of the Durham Bulls and some of his players also shaved their heads at the end of Friday night’s game, on August 28, 2015.
Diego had been battling cancer since he was six years old, and unfortunately Diego had to have one kidney removed and had undergone chemotherapy. Thankfully the surgery and therapy was successful and now Diego’s cancer is in remission.
Along with the gesture of solidarity, team Durham is also helping Diego to raise funds for the Vs. Cancer Foundation to support programs and research at local hospitals to help other children undergoing the same battle.
Diego’s mom, Addi Hernandez, was absolutely touched and thankful for the support the Durham Bulls showed for her son. She is also very happy that Diego is still with her, and that he is able to run around a play just like other kids his age.
