Chlorella Benefits: What Is Chlorella?

Many people don’t know about chlorella and when they run into the term many wonder, “What is Chlorella?” Chlorella is a micro-algae and a detoxifier that is used as a natural dietary supplement and detoxifier, and the chlorella benefits are high concentrations of chlorophyll, beta carotene, vitamin complex and B-12, magnesium, iron, RNA, DNA, protein, and amino acids.

Chlorophyll | Chelation of Heavy Metals

Chlorophyll binds to heavy metals in the body and removes them from the body in a process called chelation. Heavy metal chelation is the process of using substances that have been shown to bind with particular heavy metals, toxins, and pesticides to remove them from the body.

Chlorella’s Antioxidant Properties

Chlorella contains mixed carotenoids. Carotenoids act as antioxidants that protect healthy cells from free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cells and cause aging. Free radicals have an uneven number of electrons and look to steal an electron from another molecule. They look to bond with other molecules (a cell wall), stealing an electron and destroying that the integrity of the molecule.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons. The antioxidant themselves don't become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable in either form. Chlorella also contains anitoxidants: vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium.

Magnesium in Chlorella

Chlorella is a natural and rich source of the mineral magnesium. Magnesium is involved in more than 300 tasks in the body. It is essential in maintaining normal heart function, muscle and nerve function, supporting the immune system, and keeping bones strong. Magnesium helps in regulating blood sugar levels, supporting normal blood pressure, regulating hypertension, and is involved in converting blood sugar to energy and protein synthesis.

Chlorella | Stimulates the Immune System

Chlorella increases interferon levels in the body. Interferon are proteins that are released by cells in response to the presence of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and tumor cells. Interferon interferes with the viral reproduction in cells, activates immune cells called macrophages, and increases the ability of an infected cells to resist infection by a new viruses.

Chlorella Growth Factor

CGF is a nucleotide-peptide complex of Chlorella and is made mostly of nucleic acid derivatives. CGF allows chlorella to grow at a very fast rate and each of its cells multiplies into four cells bout every 20 hours. Experiments have shown the CGF promotes cell growth, enhances RNA/DNA functions responsible for the production of enzymes and proteins, and stimulates cell repair.

I use chlorella as a detoxifier and as a natural vitamin and mineral supplement. Vegans need to follow their B12 levels because most of the B12 we get comes from animal sources and fortified foods which are not usually vegan. When I started my vegan diet maintaining my B12 levels were a concern. I choose to stick with chlorella and spirulina as supplements to get my B12. There are different opinions as to if chlorella is a viable source of vitamin B12, if the B12 found in chlorella is the form of B12 that the body needs. Well after being on a vegan diet for a couple of months and getting a physical and blood-work done, my B12 levels are good. I am going to schedule another test in a couple of months a check my B12 levels again. I did order a bottle of vegan B12 supplements but I haven't used them. They are around just in case….
