Benefits of Marijuana

The true benefits of marijuana are not realized by smoking marijuana, though some benefits are realized by smoking marijuana. I do not support recreational marijuana use because of its psychoactive properties which can compromise rational thinking and alertness.

Cannabinoids are the active compounds in marijuana which are responsible for the benefits of marijuana, and the diagram above shows how the various cannabinoids support healthy living.

Medical marijuana has been used to treat the following illnesses:

  • ADD and ADHD
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • IBS and Crohn’s
  • Premenstrual Syndrome
  • Migraines
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Seizures
  • Tourette’s Syndrome

I researched New Jersey’s medical marijuana program and found that physicians can prescribe medical marijuana for the following conditions:

  • Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease
  • Intractable skeletal muscular spasticity
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus
  • Seizure disorder, including epilepsy
  • Terminal cancer
  • Terminal illness, if the physician has determined a prognosis of less than 12 months of life.
