Banana Plant Strangled By Coconut Roots – Fix: Video
Saving My Banana Plant From Coconut Roots
My dundatsi banana plant struggled to produce suckers, also called babies, and I needed to understand and solve the problem. Banana plants reproduce by sending up baby plants from the mother plant.
At the time I thought the problem might be that I planted the mother dundatsi banana too low underground. I did this in anticipation that when the banana plant grew it would eventually lean over from the weight of the bananas it would produce.
Planting it a bit deep in the soil would help it to stay erect, so I planted it around two feet deep. My other banana plants did grow multiple suckers, even though I planted them deep also. But I thought I should first determine if my dundatsi wasn’t producing many suckers because I planted it too low.
I dug up the dundatsi banana, being very careful not to cut any of the babies. I discovered the roots of the nearby coconut tree had invaded my banana plant’s space. They were wrapped around and some had even punctured and grown into the mother plant. Coconut roots also covered the suckers and stopped them from growing.
I had to carefully root up the mother banana plant and suckers to properly remove all the coconut roots.
Building a Wall To Keep The Coconut Roots Out
To protect the banana plant when I replanted it, I used stone blocks and cement to build a wall around it.
