Auckland University Receives 10 Million Dollar Donation For Cancer Research
Liangren Li made the largest donation in the fifty-year history of Auckland University’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Li’s decision to make such a large donation was partially based on him being diagnosed with lung cancer in February of 2015.
He said he was diagnosed with lung cancer despite never smoking and living a healthy lifestyle. Li said:
“I think it was quite bad luck to get the tumour.”
Before Li became aware that he had lung cancer, he said he had been thinking about setting up of a charity fund and he wasn’t sure what the cause would be. His personal battle with lung cancer made the decision easier for him.
When Li was diagnosed with cancer he thought he only had a few months to live, but the medicine he is taking has extended that time. The medicine isn’t only helping Li to live longer, but it is also giving him some of his strength back.
Professor John Fraser, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, is very thankful for the donation. The donation will help the department maintain its world class cancer research program, which includes long-term support for research fellows in New Zealand.
Liangren Li’s very large donation will ensure that his name will live on as part of the cancer research’s program.
