Fibroids

Fibroids are tumors in the female reproductive system, and doctors also call them leiomyomas or myomas.

They are compact and tough tumors of smooth muscle cells, and tumors of fibrous connective tissue in the uterus.

A tumor is the abnormal growth of a tissue, and fibroids or “uterine leiomyomas” are benign.

Benign tumors stay localized to a given area and therefore don’t spread to other areas.

Rarely, there is an association with fibroids and cancer. A tumor becomes cancerous when the tumor spreads to and infects other areas of the body.

Uterine sarcomas are cancerous tumors, and fortunately they are a small percentage of fibroid cases.

99 percent of U.S. fibroid cases were benign tumors and not cancerous. This study[1] showed a 0.44% cancer rate.

Women In The U.S. With Fibroids

It is fortunate most fibroid cases are not cancerous because a large number of women in the U.S. have fibroids.

These studies[2][3] estimate that 20%–40% of women in their reproductive years have fibroids. The number increases from the onset of menstruation and slows with age after menopause.

The number also varies by race for U.S. women.

This study[4] showed that 60% of African-American women by age 35 had fibroids, and the number increased to 80% by age 50. In contrast 40% of Caucasian women had fibroids by age 35. The number increased to 70% by age 50.

This smaller study[5] of women ages 18-30 also showed significant variations across ethnicity.

African-American women had the highest percentage of fibroids at 25.5%. Caucasian women 7.5%, East Asian women, 5.8%, South Asian women 5.5%, and Hispanic women 4.2%.

What Causes Fibroids?

Since fibroids rarely appear before the first occurrence of menstruation and regress after menopause, evidence supports excessive production of estrogen promotes fibroid growth.[6][7]

Increased rates of fibroids correlates positively with increased amounts of urinary estrogens and androgens[8]

Eating diets high in meat and dairy increase estrogen levels in the body and support fibroid growth. Environmental pollutants also contribute to increase fibroid rates.

African-American women are more likely to sprinkle baby powder (talcum powder) on their genitals, which doubles the odds of developing fibroids. [9]

Internal memos showed Johnson & Johnson knew about the cancer risk but still decided to target African Americans.[10]

Vitamin D insufficiency leads to increased fibroid rates. In clinical studies, vitamin D inhibited fibroid cell growth, and shrank fibroid tumors.[11][12]

This study13 found 80% of African-American women had deficient or inadequate vitamin D levels, compared to  only 20% of white women.

Fibroid Symptoms

Many women who have fibroids don’t display any symptoms, or only have mild symptoms. Other women have more intense symptoms. Common uterine fibroid symptoms include:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
  • Abnormal bleeding between menstrual periods
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Pelvic pain caused by pressure tumors put on pelvic organs
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain during intercourse

1. Have Proper Vitamin D Levels:

The Institute of Medicine recommended the blood serum level be 20 ng/ml. This study[14] indicated this level was too low and should be 30 ng/ml.

This study[15] challenged the 30 ng/ml recommendations and suggested the blood serum level be 50 ng/ml. The study found that traditional populations of East Africa had a mean blood serum vitamin D level of 46 ng/ml or 115 nmol/L.

-Darker Skin People Require Longer Sun Exposure To Make Needed Vitamin D

Darker skin people have to stay in the sun for longer periods of time compared to white or lighter-skin people to make adequate amounts of vitamin D.

The darker skin developed in a warmer sunnier climate and allowed darker skin people to stay in the sun for longer periods of time.

Darker skin offered increased protection from the sun’s UV radiation, but also caused people with darker skin to produce vitamin D at a slower rate.

2. Eat An Alkaline Plant Based Diet

Women who ate vegetarian diets had lower estrogen levels. Lower estrogen levels lead to lower fibroid levels, and also to lower breast cancer rates. High estrogen levels trigger increased rates in both.

“The incidence of breast cancer among vegetarian women (Seventh Day Adventists) is 60 to 80 percent of the incidence among American women in general, and the incidence among women in Africa and Asia is even lower.[16]

Women who ate plant based centered diets excreted more fecal estrogen, which decreased the levels of estrogen in the body. This was nearly triple the the output of women who ate meat.[16]

Women who ate meat held on to more estrogen.

-Dr. Sebi Nutritional Guide

I do recommend eating an alkaline plant based diet, based on the Dr. Sebi nutritional guide. All plant foods are not equal, even though in general they all offer more cancer protection than meat, dairy, and processed foods.

The plant foods on the guide are based on natural non-hybrid plant foods, and least detrimental plant foods.

They help keep the body in a state of homeostasis and optimal function by keeping the blood at a slightly alkaline 7.4pH.

3. Use Natural Herbs

Women have successfully shrunk fibroids eating foods from the Dr. Sebi nutritional guide, and taking herbs used in the Dr. Sebi methodology.

You can gain a comprehensive understanding of the herbs used in Dr. Sebi’s methodology, and how to use them by reading my herbal book, Alkaline Herbal Medicine.

Dr. Sebi’s Office offers two herbal products that help rejuvenate the vaginal canal, balance estrogen levels, reduce inflammation in the vaginal canal and uterus, and shrink fibroids:

  1. Estro
  2. Uterine Wash & Oil

4. Exercise

Women who exercise 7 or more hours a week have a lower risk of having fibroids than women who do not.[17]
