Rheumatoid Arthritis: Autoimmune Disease

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the lining of joints. Why would the body attack its joints? It appears the attack on the joints is not intentionally and is derived from the body trying to protect itself against a pathogen.

The offending pathogen is the Proteus mirabilis bacterium.

Proteus Mirabilis

Proteus mirabilis is a bacterium in fecal flora. The bacteria is naturally present in feces but the flora in the colon becomes overwhelmingly unbalanced in the favor of Proteus mirabilis when consuming diets high in meat, dairy, and processed foods.

Connection Between Rheumatoid Arthritis and Proteus Mirabilis

Women are three times more likely to get rheumatoid arthritis than men. Researchers looked at what infections women had more than men for a clue as to what triggered the higher rate of rheumatoid arthritis in women.

The researchers identified urinary tract infections (UTI) as a culprit. Researchers found women with UTI had a higher amount of Proteus mirabilis in their urine.

The overflow of Proteus mirabilis in the fecal flora led to the bacteria escaping the rectum and crawling into the vaginal canal. This helps lead to the development of UTI and an immune response to the bacteria.

Researchers determined that the molecular structure of Proteus mirabilis is very similar to cells in joints.

When the immune system develops antibodies to combat the bacteria, the antibodies inadvertently attack the similarly structured joint tissues.

A Plant Based Diet Reduces Proteus Mirabilis and Protects Against Rheumatoid Arthritis

Studies have shown that the consumption of a plant based diet significantly changes the gut flora.

A plant based diet reduced the amount of Proteus Mirabilis in the colon and urine. The reduction of the bacteria reversed the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.

Clearing Proteus Mirabilis from the body reduced the rheumatoid arthritis antibody immune response and the attack on the lining of the joints.
