Colorectal cancer is the most common gastrointestinal cancer and second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Though colorectal cancer is the most common gastrointestinal cancer in the United States, it isn’t in the world.

Researchers have analyzed the reason why colorectal cancer death in so high in the U.S. and the initial thought was it was the fiber in food that protected against the cancer.

Researchers looked at societies like Uganda where colorectal cancer is low and it seemed like the common denominator was fiber. Looking more closely, the evidence revealed it wasn’t the fiber or wasn’t only the fiber that reduced the incidences of colorectal cancer, but was actually the consumption of small amounts of meat.

The move towards the consumption of a whole food plant-based diet lowers or removes meat from the diet and increases fiber consumption, and therefore is protective against colon cancer.
