Ex-Fukushima No. 1 Power Plant Sues Over Cancer
A 57-year-old former Fukushima worker is suing Tokyo Electric Power Co. and its subcontractor because he developed cancer after his exposure to radiation while working as a heavy equipment operator at Fukushima No. 1 plant between July and October 2011.
He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in June 2012, which spread to stomach and colon in 2013. He filed for worker’s compensation with the Tomioka Labor Standards Inspection Office in Fukushima Prefecture in 2013.
His application was denied and he then requested that the decision be reviewed. His application appears to have been denied because records showed he didn’t absorb enough radiation to meet the government’s 100-millisievert threshold to consider a causal link between radioactive exposure and cancer.
Records showed he absorbed a total of 56.41 millisieverts while working at the plant. The claims to have been exposed to more than 100 millisieverts because he sometimes worked without a dosimeter.
Since the review was not in his favor, he felt he had little choice but to sue TEPSO for damages.
