Parasitic Worms In Raw Fish Sushi Can Tunnel Through The Body

Gnathostomiasis is the condition where nematode species of parasitic worms invade the body, and it is becoming a growing problem. People primarily become infected with these parasitic worms by eating raw fish, so the consumption of sushi increases the risk of getting gnathostomiasis. The worms most commonly migrate from one area to another under the skin and cause minimal damage. Current treatment is to make an incision into the skin and remove the worm with forceps. The worms do sometimes infect the eyes, liver, nerves, spinal cord, and brain. The worms can borrow through the intestinal wall and migrate to these organs, and can lead to blindness, nerve damage, paralysis, coma, and death.
