Aspirin Levels In Plants
Aspirin was originally extracted from the bark of the willow tree. The extract was used in traditional medicine for thousands of years to treat headaches and inflammation. Western science built on this knowledge and was able to develop a synthetic drug form of aspirin.
Aspirin doesn’t only exist in willow bark though, because people who aren’t consuming willow bark or synthetic aspirin still have low levels of aspirin in their blood.
Researchers wondered how this was possible and started looking for aspirin in other plants. Researchers found that aspirin was widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. Plants contain aspirin because they use it like humans do to protect themselves against disease.
The general population has low levels of aspirin in their blood from their consumption of plant foods.
People who eat a whole food plant-based diet or a diet high in fruits & vegetables have higher levels of aspirin in their blood to offer more daily protection against inflammation, and some of these people even have higher levels than some people who take the drug.
The issue with taking the aspirin drug is it can lead to bleeding in the stomach and brain, but that is not the case eating plants that contain aspirin.
