Don’t Fry Day occurs yearly on the Friday before Memorial Day.

Don’t Fry Day is the brainchild of National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention to encourage sun safety awareness.

Be smart and don’t fry on Don’t Fry Day or on any other day.

“Don’t Fry Day” was invented to help reduce rising rates of skin cancer from overexposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun.

An excellent way to protect from overexposure to UV rays is to understand what is UV Index and its recommendations.

The UV Index is a scale that rates the strength of the UV rays coming from the sun throughout day. The scale contains five categories and recommendations are given on how to protect yourself from overexposure to UV radiation for each category.

“Don’t Fry Day” and UV Index recommendations include these skin cancer prevention tips:

  • Knowing the time of day UV radiation is the strongest
  • Wearing protective clothing
  • Seeking Shade
  • Wearing sunscreen
  • Using caution near reflective surfaces like water, snow, and sand

Though understanding how to prevent skin cancer by understanding the UV Index, participating in Don’t Fry Day and properly protecting yourself against overexposure to UV rays is important, getting enough sun to provide the daily recommended amount of vitamin D is also important.

Though vitamin D supplements are available, getting vitamin D from the sun is the best and most natural way to get your vitamin D benefits.

The body makes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to UVB radiation. UVB radiation is most available two hours before noon and two hours after noon. This period of time is also strongest point of the UV Index.

You can use the UV Index to understand the best time to get UVB radiation along with understanding how much time you need to be exposed to UVB radiation for your skin type in order to strategically plan your sun exposure.
